Starting with the basics, At Home With Laurie Ann cracks the code to creating the home of your dreams on the budget you have. The instructions are simple and straightforward, and the look is cozy and comfortable. It’s practical because Laurie starts with what you already have, moves a piece of furniture here, makes a substitution there, adds unexpected color and tops it off with inexpensive (but expensive-looking) purchases. The result is a thrifty transformation!
This book is beautiful! There are over 200 photos and it has a ’scrapbook’ feel to it – nice to browse through it and enjoy the pictures and the tips. The emphasis is on creating a unique look that will work for you. My favorite chapter (and the one that I somehow went to first) is Chapter 6 – No Rules! Anything Goes. She suggests combining an assortment of old items, new items, thrift store finds…whatever. Mixing and matching and combining trends can help make your home look good and feel homey and lived in.
She covers tips that are specific to certain rooms – bathroom, kitchen, bedrooms, living room…. and also general ideas that can be applied to any room in the house. Most of the ideas are for regular year-round decorating, but she includes some ideas for holidays and entertaining.
This isn’t the type of book that I usually pick up, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and got some ideas for rearranging things.

I learned that Laurie Ann McMillin Ray has been involved in the Southern California interior design community since the 1980s when she began decorating model homes for her father, well-known builder Corky McMillin.
